What is THCa and how is it different from THC?

THCa (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in raw cannabis plants. It’s the acidic precursor to THC and is non-intoxicating in its raw form.

Key differences:

  • THCa is non-psychoactive in its natural state
  • THC is psychoactive and produces the “high” associated with cannabis
  • THCa converts to THC through heat (decarboxylation)
  • When you smoke or vape THCa flower, it converts to THC

This is why hemp-derived THCa products can be sold legally under the 2018 Farm Bill - they contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC in their raw form.
